Epicurean, passionate, and constantly searching for the rare gem, Chantal Comte is a pioneer who knew how to elevate agricultural rum when it needed it the most. She discovered this world early on, at the dawn of the 1980s, by visiting numerous distilleries in Martinique and gaining access to memorable cuvées, notably through the intervention of a certain André Depaz.
By the time she had already released her first selections, she received a rather surprising call in the early 1990s…
The man on the other end of the line knew she was an expert in rum (he was calling on the advice of Gault and Millau). He had just completed some work on a château in Burgundy and discovered, hidden behind the vintage wallpaper, a cupboard containing 52 bottles of rum... Abandoned on a shelf, they were in their original condition, full of dust, and literally stuck together. The levels were uneven, the corks completely porous (as Chantal Comte would later describe them as resembling watering cans), but the old-fashioned labels already revealed some details: the name Lameth, and a date, 1886. ...
